Main Line Thurnby
Circuit
Control Panel
At
Thurnby we have tried to keep the turnouts to a minimum and never use two
sets where one will do. In an area like the yard however, where congestion
is always going to be a problem, the combination of convienient switching
and isolating the shed roads into sections is essential to shed management
and engine movement.
With the likelihood of four engines on each of the shed roads, removing the
one at the rear over the various sections can only be attempted with the
aid of the track diagram which is waterproofed and located on the circuit
control panel. This is never going to be as simple as digital control but
in our circumstances, a preferred option.
The small control panel, shown in the picture is protected from 'the elements'
by pushing it away and under the track into it's box when not in use. The
circuit panel includes the control switches and are also protected by push
on clear plastic sleeves. The single black switch seen on the LH side of
the board interacts with the yard entrance 'point' and the shed road release
'point'. This in effect means that a driver is able to bring his train into
the carriage receiving roads with his own remote without disturbing the rest
of the yard or engine shed roads. When the 'ESR' is switched to the yard,
the approaching section of the outer main is automatically isolated. See
track diagram.
Of course all this is a very simplistic overview but the average visitor
is inclined to be somewhat 'blase' about the mechanics on how things work.
Just as long as his engine is moving and looks good!
