With 45mm
track we are always tempted to run Gauge one. The wide availability of
British outline is hugely tempting and 1/32 does offer a true scale which
is always a bonus to a railway heavily committed to G scale with it's
'large scale' variations. (see G Scale / Gauge 3).
As previously stated on the Gauge 3 page we are used to running live
steam at Thurnby, so most G1 running days have a whiff of 'spirit' in
the air, although the loco's and rolling stock look a little on the small
side when running through our stations and under our signal gantries.
Size does not matter however in this instance and is well compensated
for by the general high quality of construction which is well illustrated
in the Aster product range, two of which are shown in the accompanying
pictures.
Both the 'Duchess' and the 'Flying Scotsman' are spirit fired with normal
working pressures up to 4 kg/sq.cm. The loco's have two safety valves.
Other fittings include a Gauge Glass, Pressure Gauge, Blower, Regulator,
and By-Pass valve with lubrication by displacement. Water is delivered
to the boiler through a pump mounted on the driving axle and manually
through a hand pump on the tender.
